Public Policy

Public Policy of AAUW

The AAUW has Public Policy standing committees on three levels: the Association, the State and the Branch. (See the Website of AAUW-USA)
The priorities on the state level are determined by a Public Policy Survey, biennially. For 2003-2004, for instance, "Access to decent, affordable housing for all Californians" was added to the column of Positive Societal Change. (See the Website for AAUW-California.)
The North Peninsula Branch AAUW, each year, has a program for one of the general monthly meetings, at which we may discuss the pros and cons of the Propositions on  the ballot, a report on a legislative interview with one of our representatives or a talk by a state or national representative.
The Chair of the Public Policy Committee receives by e-mail the latest AAUW positions, both state and national, from Get the Facts and Action Alert which can be published in our monthly newsletter, Views and Visions.
Join us if you are interested in exercising your rights and privileges as a citizen, as well as the duties and responsibilities of a voter in our democracy.

Behind the Pay Gap

40 years after the Equal Pay Act, women's average earnings are 77% of men's earnings. Minority women face an even larger pay gap.
The AAUW Educational Foundation's research report, Behind the Pay Gap, shows the disparity for women one year and ten years out of college. Check the national AAUW web site to view this report.
Lilly Ledbetter spoke to the Democratic National Convention on August 26 about the Supreme Court decision against her wage discrimination suit. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007 passed the House but faced a Senate filibuster in April 2008.
